ASTM A242 Type 1 Corten Steel Sheets and Plates consist of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus, which offer superior atmospheric corrosion resistance. Standard composition is 0.15% Carbon, 0.25–0.50% Chromium, 0.20–0.40% Copper, and 0.50–0.75% Manganese. These plates have high tensile strength (at least 485 MPa) and yield strength (at least 345 MPa), with good toughness and weldability. The alloy develops a protective rust layer when it is exposed to the atmosphere, which reduces the paint requirement and increases its life in out-door applications.
