Carbon steel SA178 tubing is made up mostly of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. The contents of carbon generally range from 0.06% to 0.18%, whereas the content of manganese ranges from 0.27% to 0.63%. Phosphorus and sulfur contents are maintained low, typically below 0.035% and 0.035%, respectively, to improve weldability and lower brittleness. Mechanical properties consist of tensile strengths of 325 MPa (Grade A), 415 MPa (Grade C), and 485 MPa (Grade D), with yield strengths of 180 MPa, 255 MPa, and 275 MPa, respectively. Elongation percentages range from 30% to 35%, depending on the grade.
