Carbon Steel EN-1A Bars, as per BS970:1991 230M07 specifications, have a chemical composition that consists of 0.07–0.15% Carbon, 0.80–1.20% Manganese, 0.10% max Silicon, 0.07% max Phosphorus, and 0.20–0.30% Sulfur. These are responsible for the high machinability and average strength of the steel. Mechanical properties when cold drawn are tensile strength 370–440 MPa, yield strength 200–280 MPa, elongation 20–30% on gauge length 50mm, and Brinell hardness 111–149. Typical applications are to produce nuts, bolts, hydraulic fittings, studs, and textile and printing machinery components. Their high machinability lends them to be suitable for usage in high-speed machining operations like automatic and CNC lathes. Moreover, EN-1A bars can also be case-hardened to provide increased resistance to wear, and therefore they are well suited for parts that experience moderate conditions of wear. Nevertheless, they should not be used where high transverse strength or internal pressure resistance is needed.
